Nigeria’s Active Mobile Telephone Lines Hit 222.70 Million



The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), on Thursday said the number of mobile telephone lines in Nigeria stood at 222, 695, 990 at the end of August.

The commission said this in the August edition of its monthly “Subscriber Data’’ publication.
The report stated that in July, the number lines was 222, 440, 207, and increased by 255, 783 lines in August.

According to the data, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) network services in August rose to 222,695, 990 compared to July which had 222,440,207.

The Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) operators had 3,608,272 active users in August, indicating a decline of 3, 654 from 3,611,926 customers recorded in July.

The report also revealed that connected Fixed Wired/Wireless networks’ consumers increased to 349, 185 in August, rising by 252 consumers from the July figure of 348, 933.

It showed that Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) had 32, 925 in August as against 19, 420 in July, representing an increase of 13, 505.
For Tele-density of the country’s telecommunications industry, it indicated an increase of 109.14 per cent in August from 107.33 per cent in the preceding month.

The Tele-density statistics measure the percentage of a country’s population with access to telecommunication services as determined from subscribers’ data.

The Nigeria Tele-density is currently calculated on 140 million population by NCC, using the 2006 Census figures.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has instructed all telcos to bring out a Do Not Disturb feature which allows users to opt out from irrelevant calls and sms for marketing purposes. Etisalat has launched the Do Not Disturb feature which allows users to be in the Do Not Disturb list to avoid unsolicited calls and sms for marketing purposes.

NCC Sets boost The Internet Download Speed By introducing 2.6GHz Spectrum

This news is unfolding at this time when 4G LTE is getting popular all over the country. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has made it clear, the importance of the project of 2.6GHz spectrum frequency, which will
tremendously improve the availability of spectrum for fast reachability of broadband services m to all the parts of the country.


NCC said the "range would likewise make open door for the arrangement of cutting edge remote 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) innovation administrations, and
in addition institutionalization and harmonization of telecoms operations".


Director, Spectrum Administration at NCC, Mr. Austin Nwaulune, who broke this gist to journalists in Lagos recently, said "the invaluable importance of the 2.6 GHz spectrum to broadband development
and penetration, compelled NCC to release an Information Memorandum (IM) on the auction of the spectrum, which is fixed for May 16 this year in Abuja".


Expressing the pre-capability procedure to take an interest for the offer procedure, Nwaulune said candidates would not need to be authorized network administrators in Nigeria, gave such candidate must be
enlisted with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
